Dry hair is caused by damage and can be blamed on the over processing that occurs when the hair is colored, bleached or permed, or the stress of daily blow drying, curling irons and flat irons.
However, for women who live in cold climates, the weather can be blamed for frizzy tresses. Spending time outdoors in the cold dry air and then coming into furnace warmed buildings stresses hair further, causing it to dry out and become unruly.
Dry hair occurs when the cells in each strand, which in healthy hair line up in straight rows, are chipped or stressed away by the harsh chemicals used in some hair products, the every day damage of heat styling or the temperature changes associated with living in a cold climate. This exposes the inner cells of the hair strand causing the hair to lose moisture. Dry hair looks dull and lifeless because of its inability to reflect light.
Tips For Dry Hair Care
•Wash your hair every other day to avoid over drying, which can occur if you wash your hair every day. When you wash your hair, you also wash out all of the natural oils that help keep your hair moisturized.
•Use a gentle shampoo and hydrating conditioner on your hair. The conditioner should seal in moisture, and the shampoo should simply clarify your hair.
•Crack a couple eggs in a bowl and apply the eggs onto your hair using your hands. Gloves can be used to reduce the risk of salmonella poisoning. Eggs are a natural way that you can hydrate your hair at home. Another common household item is mayonnaise, which helps with split ends. After applying either the eggs or mayonnaise, keep plastic wrap on your hair for about 10 to 15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly and wash your hair with shampoo.
•Use a thick, leave-in conditioner once a week or at the very least use a leave-in conditioner that you can spray on your hair on a daily basis. This can help prevent static.
•Avoid hair care and styling products that contain alcohol, which will only dry out your hair. Use products that contain she a butter and olive oil.
•After each washing of your hair, it is recommended to apply a conditioner specifically designed for dry hair. Conditioners replace or lock in the natural oils that often get stripped out. Conditioning your hair after each washing should help you to lubricate your once-dry hair.
