Hair Removal Methods For Smooth And Silky Skin

Unwanted hair is common on the upper lip, the chin, cheeks, on the back, legs, fingers, feet, or toes. It can be caused by a variety of factors, including genetics, certain medications such as hormones or steroids, or even medical abnormalities, such as higher androgen (male hormone) levels or conditions of the endocrine system, such as polycystic ovarian syndrome.

There are many options available to remove unwanted hair, but few options to get rid of hair permanently. The different methods of hair removal from the old stand-by, shaving, to the new treatments, lasers and Vaniqa, are discussed here. Each person should chose a method or combination of methods that works best for them depending on cost, time available, skin type, and the desired hair-free area.

Hair Growth

Understanding how hair grows helps us understand how to keep hair from growing. Each hair is contained in a pilosebaceous unit, which consists of a hair shaft, hair follicle, sebaceous gland, and erector pili muscle. Hair growth and shedding is a continuous cycle through 3 phases. The anagen phase is the growth phase, the catagen phase is a transitional state, and the telogen phase is the resting phase. Hairs spend a variable amount of time in each phase determined by genetics, hormones, and area of the body. Hair in the anagen phase is more susceptible to injury than hair in the telogen phase. All of these factors must be considered when choosing a method of hair removal.

Bleaching

Bleaching is actually not a hair removal method, but rather a way to make the hair less noticeable. This is especially useful for areas that already have thin but dark and therefore noticeable hair like the arms, face, or neck. Bleaching is performed by applying a chemical to the desired area, which removes the pigment from the hair.

Shaving

Shaving is the most temporary method of hair removal because it merely cuts the hair off at the skin surface. Shaving does not make the hair shaft thicker, darker, or grow faster or slower. However, the short hair shaft may be more noticeable as it grows out because it has a blunt tip instead of the normal tapered tip. Shaving should be done after applying some type of moisturizer to the skin to help the razor glide over the skin, not cut or scrape it. Common moisturizers include water, shaving cream, hair conditioner, or body wash.

Physical Hair Removal

Physically pulling the hair out of the follicle is a common and fairly inexpensive method of hair removal. None of these methods changes the color, texture, or density of the hair. The hair takes longer to grow back because it must grow to the surface of the skin before it is noticed. Because hair grows at different rates, some of the hair that has been physically removed may take more time to grow back in. Repeatedly pulling hair out of the follicle may damage the follicle enough over time to keep it from producing more hair.

Plucking

Plucking hair with tweezers is an effective way to remove hair but can be very time consuming. The hair shaft must be long enough to grasp with tweezers.

Waxing

Waxing is an effective method of removing large amounts of hair at one time. In this method wax is warmed to allow it to be spread easily over the skin in the direction of hair growth. The hair becomes embedded in the wax, which cools and firms up grasping the hair. The wax is then quickly pulled off in the opposite direction of the hair growth, pulling the hairs out of the follicles. Cold waxes are available usually attached to strips, which are patted onto the skin. Wax that is still left on the skin must be peeled or scratched off. Caution must be used when heating wax so as not to burn the skin.

Sugar Waxing

Sugar waxing is a popular form of hair removal that works in the same way traditional waxing does. A thick sugary substance similar to caramel is spread on the skin in the direction of hair growth. The hair becomes embedded in the caramel. A cloth or paper strip is patted onto the caramel and then pulled off quickly in the opposite direction of the hair growth, pulling the hairs out of the follicles. The advantage of this method over traditional waxing is the clean up. The sugar substance is water-soluble and can be removed easier than wax by rinsing with water.

Depilatories

Depilatories use a chemical called thioglycolate mixed with sodium hydroxide or calcium hydroxide to literally melt the hair away. Thioglycolate disrupts disulfide bonds, which are chemical bonds that hold skin and hair cells together. The disulfide bonds that hold hair together contain more of the protein cystine than do the disulfide bonds that hold skin cells together. Thioglycolate is more effective on disulfide bonds that contain cystine. The major side effect of a depilatory is skin irritation because the chemical can melt away skin cells.

A depilatory is applied to the area with unwanted hair and left on for 3 to 15 minutes. During this time the chemical dissolves the hair and the resulting jelly-like substance is wiped or washed off after the appropriate time. The chemical should be tested first on a small skin area at least 48 hours before applying it to a large area. Applying a hydrocortisone cream after hair removal may help decrease irritation.

Electrolysis

Electrolysis involves inserting a fine needle into the hair follicle and applying an electrical current to the follicle root. This procedure actually burns the hair root theoretically preventing it from producing more hair. Each hair follicle must be treated individually and may take several treatments to destroy the follicle. Electrolysis is a permanent form of hair removal but it has several drawbacks.

First, there are no standardized licensing guidelines for electrolysis so finding an experienced, effective technician is difficult requiring talking to clients who have experienced permanent results. Second, this method requires repeated treatments for up to 12 to 18 months. Hair follicles that are in the telogen phase are more difficult to destroy than hair follicles in the anagen phase. Shaving approximately 3 days before an electrolysis treatment ensures that the hairs that are visible are in the anagen phase. Finally, side effects can include pain, infection, keloid formation (for people who are susceptible), hyperpigmentation, or hypopigmentation.

Laser

Laser treatment of various skin conditions has blossomed, as laser technology has become more understood. Hair removal is a common application of laser technology, but it is not permanent and not for everyone. Lasers work by emitting light at various wavelengths, energy output, and pulse widths. The wavelength used determines the skin structure it will affect such as veins, melanin, or water.

Most lasers used for hair removal target melanin and are therefore designed to burn structures that contain melanin. The more melanin, the more damage. It makes sense that laser hair removal works best for light-skinned people with dark hair. As with electrolysis, hair follicles in the anagen phase are more easily destroyed than those in the telogen phase. Therefore, laser treatments for hair removal must be repeated. At this time it appears that laser treatment, while not causing permanent destruction of all hair follicles, does retard the regrowth of new hair.

Vaniqa

Vaniqa is a prescription-only topical cream that has been FDA-approved for reducing and inhibiting the growth of unwanted facial hair. The active ingredient in Vaniqa is eflornithine hydrochloride, which has been used to treat African sleeping sickness and certain cancers. Vaniqa works by inhibiting an enzyme that is needed for cell reproduction and other cell functions necessary for hair growth. Vaniqa is applied twice a day to areas of unwanted facial hair. Noticeable results are usually observed after 4-8 weeks of therapy. Application must be continued for as long as inhibition of hair growth is desired. Vaniqa continues to reduce facial hair growth for up to 8 weeks after discontinuing.

Upper Lip Hair Removal At Home For Girls

Body hair in women is perceived negatively by most cultures and women resort to various measures to obtain flawless, smooth skin. Facial hair on the other hand is almost a taboo for women across the world and it is seen as something that not only detracts from the unmarred beauty of the face but also an element that reduces the femininity of the face. Thus most women try and get rid of this wanted hair by resorting to various home remedies.

The most commonly used practice for removing facial hair is tweezing or plucking. If the hair growth is slightly dense people even use threading to remove the hair on the upper lips, side locks and on the forehead. While some women do wax their upper lip, it is generally not recommended since the skin of the upper lip is sensitive and frequent waxing can also make the skin on the upper lips loose.

Tweezing & Shaving

If you only have a few noticeable hairs on your upper lip, you may be able to tweeze them out. You may feel minor stinging while tweezing, but it normally subsides within a few minutes.

Shaving is also a quick way to remove facial hair. Be sure the razor isn’t dull to avoid any nicks or cuts of the skin. Razor burn and minor skin irritation can be avoided by applying an aloe vera lotion to the area after shaving. Both tweezing and shaving normally last from 5-7 days and will need to be repeated on a weekly basis.

Threading

Threading is a new way to remove unwanted hairs. This technique is done by catching hairs between a twisted loop of thread and removing them from the skin. It can be a bit more time consuming and tricky to learn. However, it is virtually painless and may only need to be done every 10-14 days.

Waxing

There are many at home waxing products available for removing hair from your upper lip. The results can last for 3-6 weeks. These products are available in hot wax, cold wax, or sugar wax varieties.

Hot wax is the most popular product in which heated wax in spread onto the skin in a honey-like consistency. Cold waxes work in the same manner, but they are a thicker, putty-like product. Sugar waxes have a syrup-like thickness that is also gritty due to having sugar as an ingredient. All of these products work by binding to the hair and removing it just beneath the top layer of skin when the wax is pulled from the skin. There are also cloth wax strips available that have wax applied to them. You simply smooth the strips tightly onto the skin and the hair is removed when the strip is quickly pulled off of the skin.

Cream Depilatories

Cream depilatories are also a way to remove hair from your upper lip. You will want to be sure to use a product that says it is safe to use on the face. The cream is applied to the area and left on for 10-15 minutes while it dissolves unwanted hairs. Depilatories rinse away leaving soft, smooth skin. Many depilatories come with an astringent or lotion – type product to apply after hair removal to avoid skin irritation. The end results last only 3-5 days because they only remove surface hair above the skin.

Hair Removal At Home: Simple And Easy Ways

For everyone of us pining for a healthier and fuller head of hair, there are at least as many of us (if not more) looking to reduce the amount of hair on other parts of the body with professional at home hair removal. To help you learn about easy hair removal methods you can use to achieve the smooth, sleek and hairless body you desire. The articles presented within this site have been written by both males and females, with their distinctive points of views and experiences. And the information they provide is based upon actual research as well.

Lasers & Electrolysis

Obviously, we haven’t brought in home laser hair removal products or equipment or even electrolysis machines to try out. We leave those for the medical offices and salons. They need to be in the hands of highly trained and licensed professionals. Even with that protection, some people end up with permanent skin discoloration and serious pain. So be careful and check out the equipment, technician and clinic carefully.

Electric Tweezers

We did try one of those home electric tweezers, which is in some ways similar to electrolysis. It didn’t work well for us, but maybe someone else might have better results. The manufacturers say the hair itself conducts electricity down into the follicle where it damages the hair root, preventing growth. The sales ads say you should hold each individual hair with the tweezers for 15-30 seconds. Can you imagine how long it took us to try to clear a hairy area, one hair at a time?

Depilatory Creams

We also tried depilatories for home hair removal. We learned a lesson there, too, the hard way. It sounded so good and easy. Just smooth the cream on, wait for the hair to dissolve and scrape off then rinse.

Here’s some free advice which we missed in the fine print. Be sure to try the depilatory on a small skin area and wait 24 hours BEFORE you cover some poor guy’s whole back with it. Home back hair removal can turn into home back skin removal. Some people with sensitive skin get terrible rashes and chemical burn reactions. For those whose skin isn’t quite as sensitive, it can be a good choice.

Hair Inhibitors

However, the hair inhibitor products are totally different from the hair removal creams and we did think they were quite effective. They actually slow down the growth making hair removal much easier in the long run.

Waxing

We had slightly better results with the home waxing kit. At least with home waxing hair removal products the severe pain only lasts a few seconds repeated many times. Here the idea is to cover an area of unwanted hair with warm wax and add a strip of cloth. The unwanted body hair needs to be at least 1/4 inch long for the wax to successfully, “get a grip”, on it.

Once the wax has cooled, you grab hold of the cloth strip and yank. Your partner is likely to scream at this point as the hairs are ripped out by their roots. It was hard for me to go ahead and put him through the same process many more times to clear the whole area. The old saying, “this hurts me as much as it does you”, wrung my heart. And then I realized he’d be doing the same thing to me in a few minutes!

The good news about home hair removal waxing is it lasts about 4 weeks before you have to repeat the process. It is also relatively inexpensive.

Here’s A Little More Free Advice

Don’t plan to go to the beach or have a second honeymoon for several days after your waxing. Otherwise, you’ll learn a new meaning for having a, “tender moment.”

So That Brings Us Back to Shaving

We’ve tried both wet blade razors and electric shavers for our home hair removal. Most people say if you’re going to use an electric shaver for home body hair removal, you’re better off with a foil style rather than a rotary style. Other things to look out for are getting a wet/dry model so you can do your hair removal in the shower where the hot water will soften the hairs. Some of these models also dispense shaving gel.

A shaver with a quick charger can be a lifesaver if you are half done when the battery dies. And some of the new personal shavers are really easy hair removal products and painless to use.

If you’re looking at wet blade razors for home hair removal always use a brand new fresh sharp blade. Choose a razor with extra cushions and guards to give you more protection. Some body areas are a bit extra tricky to shave. A nick or a cut, “down there”, can cause more problems than one.

So, look around this website for yourself. Do your own research. You may be pleasantly surprised to find information that will help you get together with your special someone and share the joys of easy home hair removal.

How to Stop Greying of Hair: Remedies For Your Grey Hair

Graying of hair is a natural process. Hair turns gradually grey due to a reduction in the production of melanin pigment in the hair bulb as the age increases. You will observe the first grey hairs usually near the temples, then to the crown and then at the back of your head. Premature greying is due to a rapid decline in melanin.

Greying of hair is sign of maturity and old age. When a person gets grey hair before the age of thirty five, it is the case of premature greying of hair. Improper protein synthesis is the cause of greying of hair. The hair pigment is called melanin. When production of melanin stops and air spaces fill the hair follicle, hair becomes grey.

Actually hairs are made up of cuticles which are outer layer of overlapping flat cells. Below this layer, lies thick cortex which has horn-like keratin as its building material. Innermost cells of hair are very soft and rectangular. Pigment cells, melanocytes, are placed in the cortex. Concentration and depth of pigment melanin in these cells determines the color of hairs. There is whole range of hair color from blond to black. Production of melanin stops when melanocytes die.

So young and yet so gray? It’s a fact that many men and women grow gray hair prematurely, making them appear older (and perhaps wiser!) than their years. For some, this is a gift but for many, it’s a trend they want to stop. Graying hair is a natural process, which typically happens gradually, beginning near your temples and then on the crown of your head.

But premature graying is due to a rapid decline in melanin, as the molecules separate from each other and the hair takes on a gray appearance. This can be a result of heredity, excessive or prolonged periods of stress, and other factors such as illness or deficiency of nutrients that reduce the production of melanin.

Cause of Graying Hair:

The cause of graying hair is due to a substance called melanin which is responsible for bringing color to your hair. Sometimes your body does not produce enough melanin or produces less as you age. Melanin is made from the amino acid tyrosine so if a lack of melanin is the cause this could improve your situation. There is usually no need to supplement with Tyrosine as you body will produce it from protein food sources.

Premature Graying of Hair:

Premature graying of hair is attributed to various factors such as smoking, consumption of alcohol. As per research, the hair of smokers is prone to graying four times earlier than that of non-smokers.

The process of graying is slow and gradual. The first streaks of gray hair normally appear at the sides or the temples. This grey streak is the most unwelcome sign and is often the cause of worry for most individuals, particularly, if they are young. Hair types, genetics, textures and even stress lead to premature graying of hair. Gray hair indicates a deficiency in some part of the body.

Gray hair projects an ageing look. Plucking out gray hair does not deter the growth. It is better to cut the gray strands rather than pluck them. Alternatively, you may use one of these great cover-ups to hide the gray strands.

Nutrition:

The process of graying can be halted with proper treatment and intake of a well balanced and nutritious diet. Supplements of copper, folic acid, and B complex can restore color and hair loss in some individuals.

Balanced Diet for Hair:

Include orange and yellow fruits like mango, papaya, in your diet. Also eat fresh green vegetables in your daily food. These food products contain vitamin A which is essential for promoting glow of hairs and healthy scalp.

Vitamin B is another essential vitamin you need for the regulating secretion of oil and keeping hair moisturised and healthy. You can get vitamin B from tomato, banana, cereals, cauliflower, green leafy vegetables, yogurt and kidney beans. Also have foods containing minerals like zinc, copper and iron for health of hairs. Zinc can be obtained from chicken, red meat and green vegetables.

Remedies to Prevent Grey Hair:

•Eat protein rich foods. Proteins – Sources: sprouted whole grains, cereals, meat and soy in your diet.

What Is The Causes of Oily Hair

Oily hair is a result of excessive sebum production from the sebaceous glands attached to the hair follicle. This results in hair becoming dull, lank, lacking volume and attracting dirt more easily. It is a problem that most people deal with at some point, for different reasons. The best way to get rid of your oily hair is to pinpoint the cause of your problem and treat your hair accordingly. Oily hair is difficult to manage, can be limp, and hard to style. A common misconception about oily hair is that it is caused by an oily scalp.

Having oily hair can cause a variety of hair and skin problems. For example, oily hair can increase your chances of acne formation on the scalp, forehead and neck, as skin oil (sebum) is a major contributing factor for the formation of acne plugs in the skin’s follicles. Oily hair may also contribute to production of dandruff on the scalp and hair, and it makes your hair look unhealthy and feel dirty. The problem can be treated, but it is important first to understand where it originates.

Oily Scalp

Oily hair originates from the scalp. Inside the skin tissue of the scalp resides sebaceous glands, which produce a substance known as sebum. Sebum is an essential part of skin and hair health, as it helps prevent the escape of moisture, leaving both hair and skin moisturized. When too much sebum is produced, the hair can absorb sebum oil off the scalp, leading to oily hair.

Hormones

Hormones can also play a role in oily hair. During times of hormonal imbalance, such as during puberty or pregnancy, hormone levels can cause the sebaceous glands to produce excess sebum. The more sebum produced by the scalp’s sebaceous glands, the oilier your hair may become. As your hormones become balanced again, sebum production drops, and problems with oily hair can decrease.

Disease

Certain diseases may also increase the production of sebum on the scalp, resulting in greater risk for developing oily hair. Any disease or disorder that affects the adrenal or pituitary gland, testicles or ovaries can result in an increase of sebum production.

Accor ding to the New Zealand Dermatological Society, Parkinson’s disease may also cause an excess of sebum to be produced by the sebaceous glands.

Combs and Brushes

If you consistently use a comb or brush on your hair, this may also contribute to oily hair. When you pass a comb or brush through hair, the brush or comb pick up sebum oil from the scalp and distribute it on the hair strands as you pass it across your head. This is more specifically a problem with people who already have an oily scalp.

Deficiencies in Diet

Both oily skin and hair can be exasperated by certain a lack of certain foods in a diet. Essential fatty acids–found in salmon, walnut and flaxseeds – help promote healthy skin and hair growth, and thus can be a factor in preventing excessive oiliness. Same for Vitamin A found in many dairy products which acts as an antioxidant. Finally, a high-level of water consumption allows for both plant and skin cells to remain hydrated, and thus help cleanse the skin of excessive oils.

Dry Hair Care Tips During Winter

It’s winter and your shiny summertime hair is just a distant memory. It’s frizzy, crispy, static filled and dull. In short, the weather, indoor heat and hats have taken their toll. Dry hair is hard to control, won’t hold a curl or shine and is generally one of women’s most challenging beauty problems.

What Is Dry Hair?

Dry hair is caused by damage and can be blamed on the over processing that occurs when the hair is colored, bleached or permed, or the stress of daily blow drying, curling irons and flat irons.

However, for women who live in cold climates, the weather can be blamed for frizzy tresses. Spending time outdoors in the cold dry air and then coming into furnace warmed buildings stresses hair further, causing it to dry out and become unruly.

Dry hair occurs when the cells in each strand, which in healthy hair line up in straight rows, are chipped or stressed away by the harsh chemicals used in some hair products, the every day damage of heat styling or the temperature changes associated with living in a cold climate. This exposes the inner cells of the hair strand causing the hair to lose moisture. Dry hair looks dull and lifeless because of its inability to reflect light.

Tips For Dry Hair Care

•Wash your hair every other day to avoid over drying, which can occur if you wash your hair every day. When you wash your hair, you also wash out all of the natural oils that help keep your hair moisturized.
•Use a gentle shampoo and hydrating conditioner on your hair. The conditioner should seal in moisture, and the shampoo should simply clarify your hair.
•Crack a couple eggs in a bowl and apply the eggs onto your hair using your hands. Gloves can be used to reduce the risk of salmonella poisoning. Eggs are a natural way that you can hydrate your hair at home. Another common household item is mayonnaise, which helps with split ends. After applying either the eggs or mayonnaise, keep plastic wrap on your hair for about 10 to 15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly and wash your hair with shampoo.
•Use a thick, leave-in conditioner once a week or at the very least use a leave-in conditioner that you can spray on your hair on a daily basis. This can help prevent static.
•Avoid hair care and styling products that contain alcohol, which will only dry out your hair. Use products that contain she a butter and olive oil.
•After each washing of your hair, it is recommended to apply a conditioner specifically designed for dry hair. Conditioners replace or lock in the natural oils that often get stripped out. Conditioning your hair after each washing should help you to lubricate your once-dry hair.
Warnings

Split ends and brittle hair can result from not taking care of your hair properly during the winter season.

Natural Hair Tips To Grow Hair Faster

While Chris Rock’s movie from late last year brought awareness to an important question in the black community , which is ‘what is good hair,’ it did not start a movement for women to go au natural. Black women have been going natural on their own terms in recent years and the web is helping them do so. Transitioning from permed or relaxed hair to natural hair should be an exciting time for you. It should not be a time of intimidation or of a feeling of loss. Many women face objections from boyfriends, husbands, family and even in the workplace.

Pollution, harmful chemicals, UV rays from the scorching sunlight and stressful lifestyle result in poor and damaged hair. Just to encounter the bad hair days, we splurge on easily available hair care products like shampoos and conditioners who blow their trumpets doing false promises on advertisements. Or else, we visit hair spas and salons to get our hair fixed, only to end up with worse hair and emptier pockets. What we forget is that not all good things come with price. With a little bit of good sense and sensibility, we can reap the benefits from the innate treasures of our very nature.

In order to obtain lustrous shiny healthy manageable hair, all you need is little time for yourself out of your fussy lifestyle to take good care of your hair in lieu of going for shampoo or serums, which are fabricated with abundant insidious chemicals. These natural hair care tips will help you achieve great hair at home and will practically cost you nothing. So just, get ready to play around with some natural hair care remedies, which would work wonders for your hair, without any side effects. Here are some handy homemade beauty treatments for your hair.

Causes for Hair Care:

The main cause of hair care is unhealthy food, which include junk foods, food cooked in adulterated oil and in unhygienic condition. Other causes of hair care are excess consumption of caffeine, alcohol. Stress, depression, sorrow, pain, side effects of some drugs, etc., are some other reasons.

Diet and Lifestyle:

Diet and lifestyle are two major factors that influence the health of the hair. Poor diet, illness and deficiencies of any particular vitamin and mineral affects the quality of hair and problems like dandruff, thinning, hair, balding, premature graying etc. spoil the hair.

In an individual the condition of the hair is a reflection of the complete constitution of him. If the person is not healthy then the health of the hair will be deplorable.

Natural Hair Treatment:

•Use coconut oil or mustard oil at least three times in a week.
•Enhance oiling and massaging of scalp.
•Use amla (embilica officinalis), Shikakai (Acacia concinna) for washing the hair.
•Use natural shampoo or soap to clean the hair.
•Use medicated oils like Mahabhringraj oil, Amala oil and Arnica oil. Put oil on the scalp and massage gently in the roots of the hair.
•Maintain a regular bowel movement everyday.
•The diet should contain more green leafy vegetables, salads, milk, fruits and sprouts. Take more proteins, milk, buttermilk, yeast, wheat germ, soybean and vitamin A.
•Do regular physical exercise.
•Rub the scalp vigorously after washing the hair. It increases the blood circulation, and activates the sebaceous glands.
•A mixture of lettuce and spinach juice is good to drink to induce hair growth. The juice of alfalfa mixed with that of carrot, and lettuce juice is also good to take.
•Daily application of coconut oil mixed with lime- juice on the hair is also beneficial. Applying juice of green coriander leaves on the head is also good.
•Washing the hair with a paste of cooked Urad dal (black beans) and fenugreek (methi) 2-3 times a week.
•A paste of licorice made by grinding it in milk can be applied in the bald patches. It induces hair growth. A paste of seeds of lemon and black pepper may also be applied on the bald patches.
